D-Day for BFA

11 Aug 2016

Botswana Football Association (BFA) will hold its elective congress tomorrow.

Three candidates are vying for the BFA top post, the incumbent Tebogo Sebego, Maclean Letshwiti and Solomon Mantswe.

Football pundits are of the view that the football situation needed a shrewd leader who could bring peace and stability to the game.

But who amongst the three can restore stability and sponsorship confidence

The FIFA development officer, Ashford Mamelodi said in an interview that problems would stay for as long as integrity and credibility to football were not restored.

He said he expected the incoming leadership of the BFA to probe causes of the problems and address same in a decisive manner.

The problems, Mamelodi said, would linger on if no decisive action was taken.

He said the major cause of the problems at the BFA could  best be summed up in three points of deficiency in leadership not just at the level of the BFA NEC but across the structures of the BFA including clubs.

Secondly, he said there was poor governance within the association.

Furthermore, he said it was equally a problem that the membership of the BFA appeared not to hold leadership to account resulting in problems snow-balling out of control in the process adversely affecting the game.

Mamelodi said stakeholder management was also something that the BFA was lacking in and lack of confidence in the BFA by sponsors and other stakeholders cannot bode well for the BFA.

“Therefore importantly,  that this matter is addressed as a matter of urgency. It is not just about managing relations with stakeholders, it is also about restoring credibility and trust,” he said.

According to the FIFA development Officer, repairing the dented confidence in the BFA would require the incoming leadership to engage all stakeholders in an effort to give assurance that stakeholder management will be a priority.

The elected leaders, he said should  be those who embrace good governance in sport and be advocates of football development. Ends
