Climate change challenge to food sustenance

Minister of Agriculture Mr Patrick Ralotsia said the imperatives of climate change impose serious challenges on the nation’s ability to feed itself hence the need for farmers to find innovative ways to combat the adverse effects of climate change.
He said total dependence on rain-fed agriculture and poor soil increases vulnerability of farming systems hence ways such as Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) was an imperative for addressing impacts of climate change on issues of food security.
Speaking at this year’s national agricultural show graced by the Vice President Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, he said CSA uses conservation agriculture methods such as drought tolerant crop varieties and livestock breeds hence it could intervene against negative impacts of climate change.
Minister Ralotsia said agricultural show provides a forum where farmers showcase their achievements in terms of breeds, crop varieties and innovative technology for agricultural industry.
He noted that the theme of the show; Practicing Smart Agriculture to Combat the Effects of Climate Change, challenges stakeholders to take an active role in making agriculture a success notwithstanding the currently faced climatic challenge.
Officially opening the show, Japan Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Masahiro Onishi said that he was impressed by the growth of the show over the years.
The multitudes that came to the event, was a clear indication of development, including the increased number of exhibitors which provides a platform for increased exchange of ideas, he said.
He added that in terms of infrastructure, there was high standard judging ring and high quality kraals and stalls in which exhibitions are showcased.
Further, Mr Onishi commended the government for continuing to provide a conducive environment for the development of agriculture as one of the critical sectors for stimulating economic growth.
“Substantial financial resources have been channeled into the agricultural sector through policy programmes such as the Integrated Support Programme for Arable Agriculture Development, Livestock Management and Infrastructure Development and the provision of technical and agribusiness services,” said the envoy.
The show which commenced on July 29 and ended yesterday, brought together different exhibitors from inside and outside the country. ENDS
