Mahalapye council engages small companies
07 Aug 2016
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Frans Van der Westhuizen told Parliament on Thursday that Mahalapye Sub-district Council apply the Local Authorities Procurement and Asset Disposal Act and Regulations when procuring services for waste collection. He said through the use of these regulations, the sub-district engaged eligible companies with refuse compactor trucks and those with donkey carts. The assistant minister stated that the council would also collect refuse in other villages like Shoshong and Sefhare but tenders, specifically targeting small/medium companies were still to be awarded pending the appeal by one of the bidders. He said collection was done by small contractors using donkey carts in the rest of the villages in the sub-district. He said 163 local companies had benefited from domestic waste collection since 2011. MP for Mahalapye West, Mr Joseph Molefe, had asked the minister if he was aware that the guidelines for the tender of waste collection at Mahalapye Sub-district Council were made for large scale companies and hindered access by small companies. He further asked why tender guidelines made at large scale and not broken down to medium scale to allow small companies without compact trucks to access tenders. ENDS
