Ministry maintains register certificates of all schools

03 Aug 2016

The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya says his ministry is responsible for the registration of all primary and secondary schools both public and private.

Responding to a question in Parliament on Tuesday he said his ministry maintains a register of all schools along with copies of certificates while Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) is mandated to determine standards.

“All schools are liable for inspection to ensure compliance to standards prior to the issuance of a certificate to operate,” he said. He said schools are required to conform to various aspects including approval of the curriculum, assessment of teachers qualifications, the compliance of buildings infrastructure and site size, and class sizes.

“There has not been an investigation to establish that indeed all public/private schools in Botswana are registered and that the courses offered meet the standards required by Law, although various mini-surveys have been conducted and more recently in 2015 for sampled schools in Gaborone,” he said.

Member of Parliament for Francistown East Mr Buti Billy had asked the minister how  government ensured that all schools in the country are registered and whether the courses offered are of the required standard.

He also asked whether there has been any investigation to establish that indeed all schools and course offerings meet the standard required by the law. ENDS
