Street lights often onoff
03 Aug 2016
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso says street lights in Mahalapye particularly along Tshikinyega, Madiba, Old Kalamare and A1 road are often on and off.
Answering a question in Parliament on Monday from the MP for Mahalapye West, Mr Joseph Molefe, she said the reasons for this are varied and include damaged electrical components like armoured cables, bulbs fittings and some streetlight poles that are hit by drivers causing lights to switch off.
She said her ministry through Central District Council carries out maintenance of the street lights as and when they are reported faulty.
Ms Tshireletso noted that there were no plans to outsource maintenance of streetlights as the funds available for maintenance were limited.
In this regard, she said, her ministry through the council would continue to maintain the streetlights using its in-house electrical maintenance team.
MP Molefe had asked the assistant minister if she was aware that streetlights at Mahalapye were often out of service at Tshikinyega, Madiba, Old Kalamare Road, mall and A1 road.
Mr Molefe also wanted to know what was being done to bring them into serviceable standard, and if there were any plans to outsource the maintenance of the street lights at Mahalapye so as to improve service delivery. ENDS
