Ministry curbs illegal taxi operations
02 Aug 2016
Ministry of Transport and Communications is making efforts to control illegal taxi and combi operations in the country including in and around Francistown, says Minister Tshenolo Mabeo.
Responding to a question in Parliament on Monday, Mr Mabeo said the challenge was pervasive and not unique to Francistown.
He said the Department of Road, Transport and Safety in collaboration with the Botswana Police Service and other stakeholders continued to monitor and enforce the law concerning illegal operations of public transport throughout the country.
Mr Mabeo said during periodic spot checks and operations conducted in and around Francistown from January 2016 to date, a total of 35 illegal taxi operators were arrested of which 20 were operating without passenger permit while 15 were operating without PrDp passenger permit.
He said his ministry continued to make efforts and initiatives to curb the situation of illegal taxi operation.
MP for Francistown East, Mr Buti Billy, asked the minister if there were any control measures in place to curb illegal taxi and combi operations in and around Francistown and to state the number of illegal taxi and combi operators charged for illegal operations in and around Francistown. ENDS
