Minister not aware of delocalised positions
02 Aug 2016
Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Mr Kenneth Matambo, says he is not aware that since the assumption of office by the current managing director of Barclays Bank, all senior management positions except for two had been delocalised.
Answering a question in Parliament on Monday, Mr Matambo said on the contrary, Barclays’ current senior management team comprises seven Batswana and five expatriates.
He further stated that some citizen management staff at Barclays had been deployed to even more senior roles within the Barclays group, through what was referred to as the Bank’s Global Mobility and leadership programme.
Minister Matambo stated that the current managing director of Barclays Bank was appointed on a five year contract in September 2013, which expires in 2018.
He noted that the current managing director was deployed from the regional group head office with the specific mandate to stabilise the situation in the bank, following the resignations in 2010 and 2012 of the previous two citizen managing directors.
He also said Barclays was expected to appoint a citizen managing director once the current managing director’s contract expires and the situation had normalised.
Mr Matambo was responding to Member of Parliament for Nata/Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga who had asked the minister if he was aware that all management positions had been delocalized since new managing director of Barclays Bank assumed office, leaving only two Batswana as opposed to 11 non-citizens.
Mr Majaga also wanted to the minister to state the specific date that the contract of the current managing director expires. ENDS
