Modongo competes in Kampala

Woman International Master (WIM), Boikhutso Modongo, is in Kampala, Uganda, for the African Individual Chess Championships which began on July 16.
A press release from Botswana Chess Federation says the championships, which will run until July 27, comprise an open section and a women’s section.
Players holding the title of International Grand Master (GM), Woman International Grand Master (WGM) or WIM, the release says, had a personal right to enter the tournament.
For this reason, Botswana Chess Federation registered Modongo as an official player and she is competing at the event as per the FIDE rule.
Winner of the open section, as per the release, will be awarded title of GM, whilst the winner of the women’s section will be awarded the title of WGM.
The prizes for open section will be awarded as follows; open: first US$3 000 (about P32 000), second US$2 500 (about P26 000), third US$2 000 (more than P21 000), fourth US$1500 (more than P16 000), fifth US$1 000 (more than P10 000), sixth US$750 (more than P8 000) and seventh US$500 (more than P5 000).
For the women’s section prizes will be; first US$2 000, second US$1 500 (more than P16 000), third US$1 000 fourth US$750, fifth US$500, sixth US$350 (more than P3 000) and seventh US$250 (more than P2 000).
These championships are a qualification event for the 2017 African Chess Confederation Grand Prix Circuit and the top three players in each section will qualify for the grand prix circuit. ENDS
