SOS children under the Tennis4SOS project on Sunday had an opportunity to play tennis with tennis enthusiasts at the British High Commission’s Wimbledon Party in Gaborone.
SOS’s Jumbo Kupane and his partner Nilesh Solaroki were crowned the champions of the competition while another SOS child Neo German and her partner Goran Jurisic finished in second position.
Tennis4SOS is a brainchild of former professional ATP player Petrus Molefe and his partner ,conceived in 2014 to bring sport to the underprivileged.
Speaking at the event, founder and coach Molefe said their aim was to develop the spirit of sports and to open sporting opportunities for the SOS Children.
He said tennis offered an opportunity for children to enjoy sport worldwide, irrespective of their background.
Molefe said this was a rare opportunity for the children to mingle and play with the British community in Botswana and friends of SOS adding that he hoped that it would motivate them to become future players who would represent Botswana.
“I know that these kids would never forget this day because it was a special moment for them they received gifts and played tennis.”
Neo informed that the 11 year-old duo, German and Percy Isaac would leave for Sweden next week for a tennis training camp.
A Wimbledon cake was on the day auctioned for P1500 which money would be donated to SOS.
In an interview young German expressed her excitement about winning a trophy and explained that she started playing tennis eight months ago which she found very interesting and funny.
She further noted that she was thrilled to have been selected for the training camp in Sweden. ENDS
