Autlwetse clarifies carcass rate
12 Jul 2016
The Assistant Minister of Agriculture Mr Kgotla Autlwetse, says Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) market its beef in Botswana, South Africa, Angola and European Union.
Responding to a question in Parliament on Monday, he said for meat sold to other markets, its carcass rate was determined by Cold Dress Mass (CDM) price in Pula/kg. Both
He said both Maun and Lobatse plants had other market production of carcass for the other markets but for EU markets, carcasses are graded.
Mr Autlwetse said the carcass rates for Maun had increased from P14.00 per kg to P 19.50 per kg with effect from May 2016.
He added that BMC took a decision to review the price for competitiveness and the market for Maun product was limited to Ngamiland for bone –in and the rest of Botswana for boneless.
He further said the carcass rates for Lobatse is P 23.00 per kg and this price is aligned to competitors’ prices saying Lobatse product is sold in South Africa, Angola and other regional markets.
“The difference between the carcass rates for the two plants is 18 per cent, this is because of price paid by the different markets from each plant,” he said.
The MP for Maun West Mr Tawana Moremi had asked the Minister to state the carcass rates for different grade of cattle in Maun and Lobatse Botswana Meat abattoirs.
He also asked the difference in percentage terms between the grades of cattle at the two abattoirs. ENDS
