Setobetobe cycling club of Borolong in Shashe West has embarked on a cycling journey from Gaborone to Borolong via Serowe and Francistown to raise funds to build a house for a needy person in Borolong.
Speaking at the arrival ceremony of the four cyclists on Saturday at Borolong, one of the cyclists, also the organiser of the fundraising trip, Darius Mlambo described a shelter as a basic human right.
Mlambo noted that he was touched by the situation of one community member, which inspired him to engage the village leadership to solicit means of helping that needy person. He said it had been years seeing the old woman living in a disheartening situation with no one coming to her aid, hence the move to raise funds to change her wellbeing.
He added that after consultation with the village leadership who welcome the idea and even proposed ideas to fund raise to provide shelter for the woman.
Mlambo noted that throughout journey, they were gratified by the support Batswana gave them at every stop they made along the A1 road, and even through the social media encouraging to make it to the end.
Through the support received and determination they had, they made it to the end and are confident that journey paid off as they would be able to achieve the intended goal.
Giving a word of encouragement, Miss Botswana 2011 Karabo Samson said the move by the club, made up mostly by young people was an inspiration to many to turn the tables around. The move, she added was a clear indication that not only elders are capable of giving out but also the youth.
She noted that ‘often people are reluctant to give because of the size of the gift’ but highlighted that ‘a gift is always cherished by the recipient no matter its size.’
Samson called on the public to give back to the community and make a difference.
The project sponsors are Haskins, Furnmart, Adansonia Hotel and Building Material Supplies as well as Muslim Youth Centre, amongst other. The cycling journey of three man and a lady started on July 2 to 9, 2016. ENDS
