Dikgosi proposes for salary upgrade

10 Jul 2016

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Botlhogile Tshireletso says her ministry has received a proposal made through Ntlo ya Dikgosi in pursuit of effective and efficient service delivery on the part of dikgosi.

She said it “came as a result of a motion passed by Ntlo ya Dikgosi on the elevation of the institution of bogosi.

She added that the submission carried a number of proposals ranging from capacity building of dikgosi, review of Bogosi Act and other administrative issues.”

Ms Tshireletso further said the issue of salaries upgrading was part of the proposal and that the ministry was still consulting on the matter.

She said the current salary grading was determined in accordance with the duties dikgosi performed in 2008, and that the situation would remain as it was until the government makes a decision on the matter.

“The salary scales for dikgosi and dikgosana are as follows: kgosi D1, mothusa kgosi D2, senior chief representative D3, chief representative C1, headman of records C2, headman of arbitration B3,” she said.

Ms Tshireletso admitted that there was a need for a review of salaries of dikgosi, but said the current salary structure would stand until the matter was concluded.

Gaborone North Member of Parliament, Mr  Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to explain if there were any plans to review the salaries of dikgosi and dikgosana.

He also wanted the minister to explain why they were paid low salaries and to state their salary scales.

He also wanted to know if she was happy with such scales and why it was taking long for their salaries to be reviewed. ENDS
