Seepapitso Senior Secondary School head teacher Ms Khumo Phori has urged her students to emulate the Class of 1996 which garnered a pass rate of 85 per cent when they sat for Botswana General Certificate for Secondary Education (BGCSE) examinations.
She was speaking during a career fair at the school premises which was organised by the class of 96 geared to motivate students ahead of their examinations.
“This class of 96 are a testimony that we can be one of the best if we strive to be,” she said. She told her students to benchmark from them and that it should be a motivation to them to succeed and ascend to greater heights.
She urged them to take the exercise with the seriousness that it deserves as they intend to change the image of the school.
Former student, Mr Merapelo Tautona said they met last year in order to organise a commemoration of their 20 years since leaving the institution but decided to do it a little way differently as they felt the need to involve the students.
They decided to organise the career fair as they were from different professional backgrounds and this would motivate the students as they would see how former students were making strides in their different professions.
He challenged the students to emulate them and said that was the beginning of great things to come.
The purpose of the event was to inspire students and inculcate the spirit of learning and career guidance, to accord former Seepapitso students an interactive opportunity to share their learning and professional experience with the current Form V students, to unearth the hidden talents and aspirations of the students in the learning process as well as to finally have a reunion which would make a significant impact on the lives of the students from this year going forward.
Another former student, Ms Nono Moalosi guided the students on making the right career choices. She told them that they should identify their strengths and weaknesses, goals and interests, assess these and choose a career based on them as it is a lifelong decision.
She implored students to recognise the SWOT matrix that is their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in life as they work on shaping their future.
She advised them not to choose a career they are not passionate about because they will in the long run become stressed, depressed and have anxiety which will in turn result in poor work performance.
Former student, Ms Kegomoditse Manyanda advised them to desist from indulging in alcohol and drugs and pleaded with them to seek professional advice when they are going through challenges.
“When you hide in the school grounds drinking and smoking while your age mates are in class getting educated, then 20 years from now you will hide from the same peers you hid from,” she said.
Student prefect Bogolo Dithuri said the occasion was beneficial to them and that this year’s class was fortunate and blessed to have motivation prior to examinations. ENDS
