Motor Centre Botswana has continued sponsoring Botswana Open Tennis Championships by shelling out P178, 850 for this year’s edition.    The company has consistently supported the biggest annual tennis competition in Botswana for the past 16 years.

Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) president, Khaulani Fichani said at the sponsorship launch at Notwane Tennis Centre on Thursday that the association was grateful for backing from the car dealership.

The competition will be held over three days during the President’s holidays in Gaborone.

“Today is a special occasion for us because having the Botswana Open is a very big thing for us. The competition is a way of assessing where we are as BTA, the progress that we are making in the development of tennis,” Fichani said.

Zaheera Essof, Motor Centre Botswana dealer principal said by sponsoring the championships her company wanted to give players the opportunity to play tennis at a highly competitive level.

“It has been a consistent 16 years of sponsorship that has seen fruition in terms of the quality in our tennis players. They practice throughout the year as they look forward to playing competitive tennis against players from neighbouring countries in this tournament,” she said.

The championship usually attracts players from neighbouring countries and is played in singles, doubles, veterans and junior categories.

The winner in the men’s singles will walk away with P10 000 while the runner-up will get P6 000. Semi-finalists will get P4, 000 and quarter-finalists P2, 000.

The ladies singles champion will get P5 000, runner-up P3 000, semi-finalists P1 500, and quarter-finalists P1 000.

The men’s doubles champion will get P6 000 while the runner-up will get P4 000.

The ladies doubles champion will get P3 000 while the runner-up will get P2 000. 

The champion for the veteran singles will get P2 000, while champion for the veteran doubles will get P1 000. 

There is no prize money for junior category but winners will get medals. ENDS
