Non communicable diseases worry Makgato

29 Jun 2016

Minister of Health, Ms Dorcas Makgato, says there is need for an investment case study for lifestyle non-communicable diseases (LCDs).
Speaking at the third Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) international conference on June 28, Ms Makgato said a lot of people continue to die due to LCDs.
She said it seemed more focus was given to diseases such as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Tuberculosis (TB) while people continued to die because of LCDs.
The minister said the issue of LCDs was a difficult one, which needed a holistic approach as it had more to do with lifestyle.
On other issues, Minister Makgato called on the health institutions to produce quality that they could be proud of as they were the backbone of the health care system.
“Behaviour and how your products execute their duties should reflect the quality of institutions they graduated from,” she said.
She implored the institutions to use available resources and information to ensure the delivery of an innovative health care system.
Ms Makgato said waiting too long on the outcomes of research could in some instances delay service delivery.
She said currently, the health system is more theoretical than practical; therefore the results of their research should thrive to change this for better service delivery.
The minister called on the delegates to produce customer focused results and deliver accordingly in order to have quality health care.
She said too much reference to theory such as one’s qualification instead of delivery could impact on the delivery of quality.
Earlier, the principal of IHS Francistown, Ms Mmantate Manyothwane said the conference, which comes after every two years gives a platform for the health training institutions to meet and share ideas that affect the learning environment.
Ms Manyothwane said it helped educators to remain relevant as they were kept abreast with the latest information and innovations. ENDS
