Cluster fencing essential
28 Jun 2016
Mmalore farmers committee chairperson, Mr Mooketsa Basutlhi, has called on the farming community to fence their ploughing fields to maximise throughput.
Mr Basutlhi made the call during farmers’ day in Mmalore recently.
“We have 2 770 hectors of ploughing land that can be fenced under ISPAAD cluster fencing component,” he said.
He said since taking office in April this year, his committee had been engaged in the fight against soil erosion as well as encouraging irrigation farming particularly that the area had over 25 boreholes, which he said were underutilised.
For his part, Southern District horticulture officer, Ms Thatayaone Malikongwa, said Botswana needed 90 000 metric tonnes of horticultural products, but only produced 45 per cent and imported the other 55 per cent.
She said Southern District produced less than one per cent of horticultural products; something she said was close to nothing.
Metlobo/Magwarapitse councillor, Mr Charles Modimothebe commended organisers of the event saying it was a good platform to educate small scale farmers. ENDS
