Board freezes plot allocation in Gakuto

27 Jun 2016

Plot allocation in and around Gakuto in the Kweneng District has been frozen with effect from June 7 to address persistent claims of land compensation backlog.

Lentsweletau Sub-land Board secretary, Ms Tsholofelo Otukile, announced during a kgotla meeting addressed by the area Member of Parliament Mr Vincent Seretse that some residents still wanted to be compensated for their repossessed ploughing fields.

Ms Otukile said although the sub-land board was not aware of any outstanding issues of compensation, it would suspend plot allocation pending an investigation into the claims.

She added that the residents would get feedback by July 7 this year. The local landboard once acquired some people’s farming plots in the area for residential promising monetary compensation.

On other issues, MP Seretse announced that the village electrification extension would benefit under the recently introduced Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) beginning July.

He also said the project was expected to be completed within the current financial year, adding that the situation of water shortage in the area was due to the unavailability of a collection reservoir.

He said to relief the situation, the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) had arranged a water bowser to supply the village.

The MP also announced that the corporation had suspended the installation of new connections until the network had been upgraded.

Furthermore, Mr Seretse urged the residents to utilise available government initiatives in order to become self-reliant.

He complained of people who did not attend school activities to support their children and teachers who will be encouraged knowing that they have parental support.

He reminded the residents that the roving torch would be arriving in the district from July 30th through Kgope, saying he was glad that the residents were busy preparing for the big day.

The MP thus urged the constituents to also actively prepare for the 50th anniversary celebrations.

Meanwhile, councillor for the area Mr  Selaledi said MTN-Botswana had donated to Gakuto Primary School, 10 tables, a smart board, overhead projector, and a networked computer, all worth P112 600.

He said MTN also donated revision text books for standard seven pupils and will be maintaining the internet connection project for the next 12 months. Ends
