Makgadikgadi Open expects 60 golfers

23 Jun 2016

The annual Makgadikgadi Open which has been running for the past 15 years, and is one of Botswana Golf Union’s majors, will take place this weekend at Sowa Town golf course.

In a response to a questionnaire, the chairperson of the hosting Team Sowa, Sabelo Matikiti said they were expecting about 60 golfers both locally and across the borders.

Matikiti explained that the tournament was going to include three categories in A, B and C for both men and women, and that it will also include the junior category as part of juniors development programme.

The tourney will run for two days on the 18-hole golf course, he said, adding that the host would be represented by eight players, among them Botswana Golf Union (BGU) ladies vice president Ntando Ramphethu and Molly Kgame.

On the men’s side, immediate BGU past president Simon Ramphethu will be among Team Sowa together with Ezekiel Sondani, Geoffrey Labi, Oteng Makhumalo, Tashatha Mbangiwa, and Matikiti himself.

Ramphethu will be challenging for the B Division championship having won it before, while on the ladies side, national team player Minky Molatlhegi from Gaborone, and one of the favourites, is expected to do her thing to capture the championship.

Still on the ladies category, upcoming young Onami Mhotsha, also from Gaborone, will undoubtedly give the veterans a hard time on the course as she challenges for the championship.

Among the contenders expected to give their hosts a run for their money, are this year’s Selibe Phikwe Central Open tournament champion, Leroy Pearmain, Peter Podise of Francistown, Shane Granger of Selibe Phikwe, and Walter Seokemong of Orapa.

The tournament has been sponsored by Botash to the tune of P65 000. ENDS
