Mascom launches new application

Cellular phone network provider, Mascom, has launched a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) application.
Speaking at the application launch in Gaborone on Tuesday, product development officer Mr Matlhogonolo Maje, said the My Mascom DIY was a self-service application available for download on smartphones and also as a web portal, hence could be accessed by anyone with access to internet or through the mobile phone browser.
The product is available for both prepaid and postpaid customers and currently for only Android smartphones (via Google Play Store).
Mascom DIY application offers users an around the clock service such as sim card registration and offloads queries for call centers.
The app is available for free over Wi-Fi but costs only 95 thebe per MB to download over the network.
Mr Maje said the application offers basic view while for complete view, subscribers would need to visit Mascom stores for assistance for validation process.
Mobile Topup has also been simplified and Mr Maje said in complete view, subscribers are able to purchase items for their loved ones.
Basic view offers limited services unlike complete view which has services such as transactions.
Meanwhile, journalists were taken on a tour of the Mascom Innovation Centre which is opposite regulators, Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).
The Base Transmission System, named Cool Tower by its designer, is one of its kind and was made specifically for Mascom.
It has three giant legs with ladders neatly built inside, shielding maintenance personnel from harsh weather conditions.
The transmitter system feeds the Radio Base System.
Journalists were also taken to the Energy Centre where is it connected through a feed from Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and is divided to two power points to ensure there was always power in case when one fails. ENDS
