Amos back in action

The 800m runner, Nijel Amos, is back in action and his ambition is to take Africa by storm.

He has been missing in action due to fever.

Amos is part of a team that will compete in Africa senior championships pencilled for  South Africa on June 22-26.

Since the season started, Amos missed some Diamond League meetings, but only managed to compete in Rabat meet, which he finished on position six, clocking 1:47.37.

He pulled out of the Eugene race due to fever.

Amos said he had been training and he was about 75 per-cent fit, adding that he had to cancel all the races so that he could give his body enough rest to recover.

“I don’t like to risk my health, my ambition is to give my best on track, so if I’m not well how can I perform well, “he said

He won a gold medal in the 2014 African Championships in Athletics that was held in Marrakech, recording 1:48.54, followed by Ethiopian Mohammed Aman with 1:48.56, while Algerian Taoufik Makhloufi settled for position three with 1:49.08.

“All I want in Durban is to defend my title, although I have not been in action, I would say I am now feeling much better to conquer Africa I hope I will run a good time there, “he said.

He said he had been preparing well for both Durban and Rio Olympics, adding that after the African Championships, he would compete in Diamond League meeting in Monaco, where for the past years he had been clocking good times.

 In the last African edition,  Botswana only managed to win six medals, four gold medals won by high jumper Kabelo Kgosiemang, Nijel Amos, Isaac Makwala and 4x400 men’s relay,Makwala also won silver in the 200 metres whereas bronze was won by 4x400 women relay.ENDS
