Vice President , Mokgweetsi Masisi joined local and visiting South African car spinners for a pure adrenaline rush spinning contest dubbed ‘The Earthquake’ hosted by Spin City Botswana on Saturday.
In his usual casual element, Masisi was ushered into the pit at the Fairgrounds Spinning Palace in great spectacle clad in his trademark flat cap and baggy black jeans while a convoy of cars lined up just behind him.
The impressive crowd that had gathered to witness their favourite sport were treated to a rare feat when Masisi jumped into a light green 2.7litres Gusheshe, an idol name for the box shaped BMW 325. He was the co-driver of 27-year-old Nazeer Gabriel from Team Showstopper of Mafikeng. In an interview on the sidelines of the event, Masisi said he was pleased with the development of the sport in Botswana.
He said after learning that the sport was now regulated and pushed from being an illegitimate past time activity, he was encouraging young people to take up the sport and train other aspiring spinners. The VP also promised event organisers that he would appeal to financiers to assist in developing the sport.
Meanwhile, during the spinning spectacular, Masisi’s driver, Gabriel produced some crazy flips, driving in a snakelike motion and suddenly pushing the car up into a 360 degree spin ending when one of the rear tyres bursting with an explosive bang spewing hot rubbles into the roaring crowd.
However, the real showstoppers came in the mould of South African brothers Jean ‘Panjero’ Kruger and Austin Kruger. Panjero, the youngest spinner in South Africa at only 13 years, was quick to earn the awe of spectators.
