Must win encounter for Zebras
02 Jun 2016
The national football team is skating on thin ice in its quest to book a place at the 31st edition of the African Cup of Nation (AFCON) billed for Gabon next year.
The Zebras team must beat the Cranes of Uganda in Francistown on June 3 in order to keep alive the dream of qualifying for the tournament.
Zebras are on third spot with six points in Group D of the qualifiers. Burkina Faso and Uganda are tied at the top spot with seven points each.
The Zebras lost 0-2 in Kampala when they played the Cranes last year.
However, Peter Butler’s charges would be hoping to continue their impressive record at the Francistown ground.
The team will also be in high spirits after beating Lesotho 2-1 in a friendly recently.
On one hand coach Milutin Sredojevi would be nursing bruises of their 0-2 defeat to Zimbabwe in a friendly match recently.
Zebras must be mindful of Ugandan skipper, Geoffrey Massa. The 30-year-old Bloemfontein Celtics striker scored the first goal when the two teams clashed in Kampala.
Butler must have his attacking forces well-oiled because in between the post Uganda have on their side South Africa Premier Soccer League’s goalkeeper of the year in the form of Dennis Onyango.
Onyango played a pivotal role for South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. Ends
