Academic excellence requires unity
31 May 2016
Jwaneng mayor, Mr Tsietsi Odira-Kwenje, has urged parents to actively participate in their children’s education.
Mr Odira-Kwenje, who was the guest speaker at Kanye schools sub-region excellence awards in Kanye on May 27, appealed to parents, teachers and children to work together for better academic performance. He said education was a three-legged pot that needed all stakeholders to pull up their socks to assist students.
He appealed to parents to inform the teachers about their children’s weaknesses, strengths and the diseases they were suffering from.
Mr Odira-Kwenje also called upon government to maintain schools and avail all learning resources to make schools a conducive learning environment.
He further appealed to the government to take note of teachers’ grievances, adding that teachers were not paid well.
He said the fact that teachers were expected to share accommodation undermined their privacy. On other issues, the mayor criticised elders who had sexual relations with students and impregnanted them. He said strong measures should be taken against the culprits.
For her part, chief education officer, Ms Maipelo Kesenye said school was where children gained their understanding of the world and their place in it.
She said as such nothing was more important than what the children learnt at school.
She encouraged awards recipients to serve as role models, mentors, coaches and sources of inspiration to other students.
“Kanye sub-region has been striving to produce quality results, hence the motto; Quest For Excellence.
This was evidenced by the continuous academic improvement we are experiencing in the quality performance over years,’’ she said.
Ms Kesenye thanked sponsors, PTA and donors for their encouragement and support. Ends
