Paper for Africa awards best achievers
26 May 2016
After pledging its support to award best achieving and assist low achieving primary schools in the Nkange constituency, Paper for Africa Company has kept its promise.
“We have come to fulfill the promise we made last year before students sat for their Standard Seven final examinations,” said the company’s managing director Mr Joseph Puvimanasinghe during the awarding ceremony in Tutume recently.
Mr Puvimanasinghe said having two schools scoring a 100 per cent pass rate was an achievement that needed to be celebrated and honored.
He said such performances had a lasting impression on the achievers themselves as well as the nation at large.
He noted that it would be a challenge and motivation to others who had not done well to do their best to beat the current top position scoopers.
Dagwi and Changate Primary Schools each got away with P5 000 and certificates for being best achievers among primary schools in the constituency.
The managing director also reminded the audience of his company’s pledge to work with low achieving schools.
“We have consulted with the affected schools to get firsthand information on what can be done to improve results,” he said, adding that they had brought Standard Seven revision books for mathematics, science and agriculture worth P13,500.
Regarding the results of the entire 18 primary schools in the Nkange constituency, the Chief Education Officer for Tutume region, Ms Luzile Mudongo said they had performed beyond the national target of 76 per cent for ABC by scoring 85 per cent.
“The quality of AB pass was good because we scored 70 per cent above the national target of 54 per cent,” she said proudly.
She said their success came from team work and commitment across the entire constituency, and that, schools had been classified according to clusters for easier sharing of ideas on how best to produce best results across all the team players.
Ms Mudongo said, with the support they get from the leadership, they have managed to overcome major challenges that hinder outstanding performances; hence the best results.
The Member of Parliament for Nkange, Mr Edwin Batshu, who is also the minister of Labour and Home affairs, said when he became MP, he committed himself to helping and urging schools in his area to take education seriously because education changes people’s lives and in turn the economy of the country.
Mr Batshu said the roving trophy initiative he introduced for schools to compete for had brought commitment and competition among the schools in the area; hence the good results.
He also said the constituency often arranged workshops aimed at team building and motivation for teachers to improve their teaching skills.
Meanwhile best students from the last Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) were also awarded, with each of them getting P2500 prize monies. ENDS
