I AM campaign motivates youth
19 May 2013
American Michelle Gavin of the United States has urged young people to make choices and take actions that will make them the kind of persons that they want to be.
Speaking at the I AM campaign launch at Ledumang Senior Secondary School in Gaborone, Ms Gavin said the campaign would provide mentorship and training to students. She said it was important to reach out to young people and to get them to think about their lives and what they could contribute.
The American Ambassador said the I AM programme had been introduced in schools to help students find their purpose and reduce their chances of suffering from alcohol and drug abuse as well as giving them the knowledge to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
She applauded the chairperson of Do It Yourself (DIY) Organisation, Mr Game Bantsi, affectionately known as Zeus for sacrificing his time in a bid to assist the youth by giving them the self-awareness, skills, vision and confidence that would enable them to build a brighter future for Botswana.
She said Zeus had proven commitment with his lyrics and the message that he conveyed as a musician and through efforts like the I AM project. Zeus and his team were giving back to the community with the objective of building a better future for the young and the country they will lead, she added.
One of the beneficiaries of the project, a student at Ledumang Senior Secondary School, said the project was an eye opener for him as he was indulging in drugs, but was pleased to have found the correction measure to his wrong decision.
He also urged people to desist from taking drugs as they would ruin their future. ENDS
