Jwaneng Bowlers celebrate win
22 May 2016
The Jwaneng Bowling Club recently held a celebration dinner in honour of the bowlers’ recent performance at the Botswana Bowls National Tournament held in Orapa from April 30-May 7.
The team scooped second position after Francistown in a competition that also attracted bowlers from Orapa, Selebi-Phikwe and Gaborone.
Speaking at the event, Jwaneng Bowling Club interim secretary Regent Reid attributed the team’s impressive performance to their commitment as well as the support from the Jwaneng community
Even though they were faced with challenges such as lack of sponsorship, he said they managed to fund their trip from their own pockets.
Therefore, Reid appealed to companies and individuals to pledge their support through sponsorships so that bowling could grow further.
He noted that their intention was to bring junior bowlers on board so as to develop the sport from grassroots level.
However, he said like every competition, the success of such an objective was dependent on sponsorships.
As the club, he said they would host the national tournament next year, and that it was time for companies to show support through sponsorship. He noted that accommodation was still a challenge in Jwaneng as they were expecting bowlers from across the country.
He applauded Debswana for its support that included transportation of bowlers during competitions as well as availing and maintaining the facilities.
Debswana Jwaneng mine facilities manager, Isaac Tswetla said his company was proud to support excelling teams such as Jwaneng Bowling Club.
He said Jwaneng was generally a sporting town and Jwaneng mine was doing its best to support different sporting codes such as bowling, football and chess among others.
He said even though Debswana was doing its bit to support the team, he called on other companies to come forth to take part in the development of sport.
He noted that even though accommodation was a challenge in the township, he was optimistic that next year’s national tournament would be successful since it would not only benefit the bowling team, but Jwaneng as a whole. ENDS
