15 May 2016
Tuli Block Farmers Association on Saturday held annual farmers’ day and auction sale at Shapane Ranch. The event, in its fourth year, brought the Tuli block farming community together.
Aspiring farmers also had an opportunity to have a look at different breeds of cattle such as brahman, bonsmara and breeds for goats such as boer goat and Kalahari red.
Different farming equipment such as fishing vessels, tractors, farm grader, crop sprayers, oil press from different farms were also available.
There was so much to discover at the farmers day because there were stalls for the organisations which assist farmers financially such as CEDA, different banks and the companies that distribute livestock requisites to small, medium and large scale farmers.
One of the organisers of the event, Ms Irma Herbst, said the event had “grown from strength to strength and handles all the business for us here”, she said. She said when the event started four years ago, all the auctioning was done in one day but they changed it to two days to accommodate all the sellers.
Ms Herbst said the event was an important forum for farmers to sell their livestock and buy from others adding that farmers also had an opportunity to learn from each other. Ms Herbst said the event had become one of the most sought after annual event in the calendar of farming.
She said it was a great opportunity to open the doors to the community so that they could showcase different breeds that existed in the country. The mechanisation manager for Agri-shop, Mr Mooketsi Muzila said that it is their chance to meet and interact with their main partners (farmers) because they exist because of them. ENDS
