 Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTCL) general manager (Strategy), Christopher Diswai has revealed that beMOBILE will sponsor the Francistown marathon slated for August 7 to the tune of P500 000.

Speaking at the launch of the marathon on May 11, Diswai said, “I am delighted that this year’s marathon will attract over 2000 runners, both young and old with some coming as far as Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia.”

Diswai said BTCL Foundation was proud to be associated with the marathon as main sponsors because the initiative aimed to raise funds for charitable causes while promoting friendship and a healthy lifestyle.

He was optimistic that the marathon would bring economic benefits to Francistown and the surrounding villages.

“I remain confident that the economic benefits that this will bring to Francistown and the surrounding villages will increase as the reputation and brand of the Francistown City Marathon and the BTCL Foundation becomes more prominent,” said Diswai.

In her welcome remarks, Francistown mayor, Sylvia Muzila reiterated the importance of the event adding that it would help the community.

She applauded the BTCL for the positive response in terms of sponsorship and thanked all stakeholders including the media for publicising the event and making it a success when it was hosted for the first time last year.

The Local Organising Committee chairperson, Ben Tobedza shared the sentiments with the mayor that the first event was a success. He thanked the BTCL for sponsoring the previous and the upcoming event.

For his part, the Francistown district officer – development, Boyce Mangole said sports builds cohesion and people tended to know each other through sports.

He urged all stakeholders to take advantage of the new stadium and bring events to the city.

The marathon which was first launched last year and held on February 15 is aimed at raising funds for charitable organisations in and around Francistown. ENDS
