No water treatment plant for Maboane
12 May 2016
The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has no plans of establishing a water treatment plant at Maboane village in the Letlhakeng sub district.
Responding to enquiries on the whereabouts of the plant by councillors during the Letlhakeng Sub-council forum on May 11, the WUC water works superintendent, Mr Kobamelo Letsatsi explained that contrary to believes by the councillors, the said water treatment plant was never promised and was not even in their plans.
He said at the moment the challenge of water shortage at Maboane village was being addressed through electrification of the existing village borehole as well as installing a larger storage tank, a project that was sponsored by Debswana.
He said the electrification of the borehole would enable it to pump enough water to even relief the Mahupu unified school in Takatokwane.
Concerning shortage of water at the nearby Malwelwe village, Mr Letstsi said the borehole that supplied the village had long failed to yield enough cubic metres to supply the village.
He said at the moment they had provided a water bouser to supply the village as well as the nearby settlement of Maratswane.
Mr Letsatsi also said the contaminated borehole that people allegedly drank from at Khudumelapye village was not under their jurisdiction, and said therefore they had no powers to close it down.
He said they investigated the issue to try and find the owners of the said borehole, but to no avail.
He therefore advised that the village leadership should take a decision to close it down as it could be a health hazard to the community.
On water pipes blockage at Lempu junior school in Salajwe, Mr Letsatsi promised that they would follow up the issue as it was never reported to them.
He said the challenge of shortage of water at the school however, was currently being addressed.
Mr Letsatsi was responding after the councillor for Khudumelapye-Sesung, Mr Phineas Tumiso complained that residents of Khudumelapye had resorted to drinking water from a contaminated borehole as the existing borehole did not produce enough yield to water the whole village.
Nominated councillor, Ms Gabampatle Ramonnanyana also wanted the corporation to update them on the water treatment plant which she said had long been promised Maboane village.ENDS
