Unity essential for community building

12 May 2016

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Francistown East, Mr Buti Billy has said there is a need for unity amongst members of the community for better developments in the area.

Addressing residents of Itekeng Ward at Area W recently, Mr Billy said  as long as they are not united, their ward will not grow or be a better place envied by many, but rather people will always be fearful of it.

He said this responding to the concerns of community members that there is no peace in the community as crime continues to grow, more especially in the afternoons and the use of vulgar language amongst the Ipelegeng workers, which they say has become a norm.

Furthermore, he said the Ward Development Committee (WDC) should lead by example as they are the pillar of the community and he encouraged them to work closely with the area councillor so that they attend and resolve community issues at an early stage.

He added that it is important for people to know that they have differences but at the end of the day, for the sake of the community build up, they must work together.

Mr Billy also encouraged the youth to attend leadership workshops in order to get proper guidance and knowledge from the specialists of specific topic discussions as it will help them grow their businesses.

He emphasised the spirit of working together as one to the residents, saying that issues of theft could  be minimised if the community is working together and through forming crime fighting clusters.

On behalf of the WDC chairperson, Ms Pauline Mhlasi said she is concerned by the escalating rate of crime, noting that they have now become fearful for their lives in their own homes.

She also raised her concern on the vulgar language being used by Ipelegeng employees, saying that it has become worse and has torn the workers apart and that contributes much to the workers being unproductive as they spend the time they should be working solving such issues.

Ms Mhlasi said if this ugly tendency is left unattended, something bad might happen in the near future and it is a set back to the community projects they have to carry out as they are always behind schedule.

She encouraged the youth who are on the Ipelegeng programme and those who are unemployed to work hard to achieve better results, saying that it is important that they equip themselves with the necessary knowledge in today’ society because times have change.

“It is better for the youth to use the technology they are privileged to have to change their lives for better than use it to destroy other people’s lives,” she said. ENDS
