Squatting worries Letlhakeng Sub-council
09 May 2016
Chairperson of Letlhakeng Sub-district Council, Mr Tlotlo Batlhophi has said the sub-district is faced with a challenge of squatting.
Addressing Letlhakeng sub-council forum on May 9, Cllr Batlhophi said squatting was rife especially in the areas of Magakabe, Masope and Kolojane.
Cllr Batlhophi said there were 55 squatters at Kolojane while at Magakabe and Masope the number of squatters was still to be determined.
“A total number of 19 out of 55 squatters in Kolojane have registered for allocation in Khudumelapye. The initial plan was to allocate them during the January/ February 2016 board sitting within a mini layout. However, this has not been possible due to abolition of mini layouts,” he said.
Cllr Batlhophi, however, assured the meeting that these would be allocated as soon as an approved layout is available.
He appealed to councillors to encourage the people to follow the right procedures in order to acquire land.
On other issues, Cllr Batlhophi warned that the deadline for land registration for residential land parcels in the whole country would be at the end of September this year.
He, however, said Kweneng District had been given until end of August based on how much had been achieved so far.
Citing progress in some of the land boards in Kweneng, Cllr Batlhophi said in the Motokwe sub land board jurisdiction, registration started in 2013 and is currently 75 per cent complete while the survey is almost complete for all residential plots.
He said Letlhakeng Sub-land Board registration started in November this year therefore only one stage of the process was done since the area was still not surveyed.
Cllr Batlhophi said land rights owners had been heeding the call to register by doing so in the office.
He, however, said there was still more work to be done as they were still awaiting private surveyors to complement the challenge of shortage of surveyors in the land boards.
“We are expecting private surveyors to arrive in the area mid this month.
Once they start surveying, there will be need to do house to house inspection in order to meet the deadline.
He said extensive publicity to sensitise the public is currently on around various villages across the sub district. ENDS
