Market days create opportunities

08 May 2016

Market days are intended to give business owners the opportunity to interact and market their businesses as well as to share ideas.

This was said by Sekoma Primary School  head, Mr Oscar Leatso at the official opening of the market day at Sekoma recently.

Giving the objectives of the event, Mr Leatso said the idea was to make the event a weekly activity, where people could showcase, promote and market their products and services such as catering, horticulture, bead work, among others.

Mr Leatso said the initiative was intended to create benchmarking opportunities among members of the community, where people could learn from others for self-improvement. He also said business people should use the event to lure tourists to the village and make them aware of the products that they could buy on transit along the Trans Kgalagadi Highway.

“Going forward, we wish there could be a profile of everyone who has a business in the village so that they could be known around,” Mr Leatso said.

Mr Lentebanye Sebula, senior adult officer under the Out of School Education Training in Mabutsane said they found the need to start the activity in Sekoma so that people could also use the government initiatives for community empowerment.

“Let’s use these market days to benchmark and share business ideas so that we can have strong businesses and create a bigger market. We should even design bill boards that would make our businesses known,” he said.

Mr Sebula urged Sekoma residents to start marketing their businesses as it was evident that there was a lot of talent in the village. He said such a move would even help in cost reduction as they would be minimising the amounts the customers spent travelling to town to access such services.

One entrepreneur, Ms Selina Phometse expressed her gratefulness for her catering and tent business, which she started through the help from the government’s poverty eradication programme. She said she was now able to feed herself and her family. ENDS
