BCL Mine’s Amahot Ladies Football team are this year’s Selebi-Phikwe 5-Aside charity tournament champions.

Amahot clinched the title after walloping Mmadinare Senior Secondary School 3-1 in the finals played at the Selebi-Phikwe stadium recently.

The team, which comprises eight players, would thus enjoy a sponsored trip to Kasane for a two-night free accommodation, food, boat cruises and safari tours. Mmadinare ladies would receive medals only as runner-ups.

In an interview, the tournament organisers SOMAG Promoters marketing manager, Kago Letshabo said the Selebi-Phikwe 5-Aside charity tournament was an annual event which started last year.

Letshabo said through the event, their aim was to raise funds to buy winter clothes for the less privileged children around the mining town.

Last year, he said they managed to raise funds and purchased clothing for children in Botshabelo ward while this year, they would donate clothes to children in Distance ward.

He said funds were raised through team registration fees of P700 to participate in the tournament, adding 23 teams from Selebi-Phikwe and Mmadinare took part in the event.

Further, he explained that the charity tournament also served as a gathering for families because the event included other activities such as jumping castles for children.

Again, the event served as platform for local businesses, both small and large, to set up stalls to exhibit and promote their products.

Meanwhile, the tournament was divided into groups of four teams and a knock-out system was used. Two top teams in each group were promoted to the next stage before qualifying for the semi-finals where only four teams competed.

Also, the top two teams in the semi-finals qualified for the finals to compete for position one and two and for the winning prize. ENDS
