Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Silas Motlalekgosi, says discipline is an attribute commonly found in organisations that perform well.
Speaking at the National Assembly awards ceremony recently, Mr Motlalekgosi said staff needed to “to live, eat and breathe self-discipline”.
He said the public service should continuously and constantly generate ideas in order to promote innovation.
“We should compete with and aim to surpass the best organisation thereto by accustoming ourselves to creativity in big way knowing that creativity on a larger scale will follow. This entails continuous improvement,” he said.
Mr Motlalekgosi noted that this year’s awards had included a category of best performer from each unit, which he said was a good initiative as it enhanced professionalism.
Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Gladys Kokorwe said an institution like the National Assembly needed to be cautious of risk areas that could compromise its integrity.
She pleaded with staff to guard against corruption at both personal and institutional level.
Regarding the awards, she said the event was organised to so as to appreciate the good work done by members of staff.
She noted that lack of appreciation was a major reason why people left organisations, second to lack of career development opportunities.
“In every measureable way, organisations that utilise recognition and ward programs experience much lower employee turnover, fewer attendance problems, much higher customer loyalty and increased employee productivity,” she said.
Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms Barbara Dithapo, said award ceremonies provided institutions the platform to motivate those who contributed to success of the organisation.
She said it was also opportunity to encourage others to put in more effort so that they could be the next winners.
The awards included employees who served the public service from 30 years and above, best performing departments among others. The employee of the year award was snatched by Mr Bakang Khumanego.
He won a trip to Maun, which included game drive and boat cruise, P5 000, voucher, trophy and certificate. Ends
