UB hosts athletics national champs

UB rubber athletics track will be torn in pieces on Saturday when athletes from different tertiary schools battle to qualify for the regional Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) games to be staged in Zimbabwe in July.
The championship organised by Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association (BOTESSA) will be divided into three categories, with Bracket A consisting of colleges of education, HIS and Police College.
Bracket B is made up of private institutions, University of Botswana and Botswana International University of Science and Technology, whereas bracket C comprise of technical colleges.
BOTESSA public relation officer Duncan Segabo told BOPA that the championships promises to be a thriller. He said the competition would be timed by Botswana Athletics Association electronic timing, hence those who managed to clock Olympic qualifying times would automatically qualify and qualify for CUCSA games pencilled for Zimbabwe.
Segabo said all those who finished in position one and two would automatically qualify for CUCSA games
“Talking about CUCSA, countries like Zambia and South Africa have been beating us, so this time our intension is to turn the tables,” he said.
BOTESSA, he said was confident that all those who would qualify would definitely leave the mark, as more athletes were salivating to represent and hoist the country's flag very high. The last time Botswana participated in CUCSA games was in 2014 where they finished on position two overall.
Different athletes are expected to slug it out in different categories with relay the highlights of the day.
Minister of Youth Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng and other government officials are expected to grace the occasion. ENDS
