Phikwe team ready for volleyball league

New kids in the Mascom Volleyball League, Selebi Phikwe Volleyball Club, have expressed their readiness for the tough challenge of competing in league games.
The club, which was established last year, was accepted as an affiliate of the Botswana Volleyball Federation during an extra-ordinary congress held in Gaborone on Saturday.
They will field a ladies team in this year’s Mascom Volleyball League. Their membership increased the number of teams in the ladies league to eight.
The secretary of the club, Onalenna Nare, said they were honoured to have their application for membership approved by the BVF.
He stated in an interview immediately after their acceptance to the BVF fold that it was their dream to play in the volleyball league.
Nare said their team has a lot of ambitions for the future even though their squad consists of young and inexperienced players.
“We are ready to start competing straight away. Our players still require a lot of development because most of them are young and inexperienced. But we are ready and our intention is to push for a top four position at the end of the season,” Nare said.
Nare said the mission of the team is to take the girl child out of the street and give her an opportunity to play sport and gain fitness.
The Selebi Phikwe team is going to be the second team from the north of the country in the ladies league.
Last year, Mag Stimela, which finished bottom of the league, was the only team from the north in the ladies league.
Nare said it is going to be a challenge being one of two teams from the north as they will have to do a lot of traveling.
However, Nare stated that the team is determined to make an impact in the league.
“We are trying to run around the business community in Selebi Phikwe to see how they can assist us financially. We are talking to people in the transportation industry and some of them have promised to give us the little assistance they can manage. We also have members who help the team,” Nare said.
Meanwhile, the same extra-ordinary congress of BVF also accepted a membership application of Goyapele Volleyball Club from Maun. The team however has explained that they would not be playing in the league this year. ENDS
