Sport is known to be a great form of rehabilitation and source of income Therefore, it is one way in which the Passion For Souls Church use to keep the youth out of mischieve and off the streets.
The church in conjunction with the Youth of Africa Leaders Empowerment (YALE) organization recently had a coaching clinic at Kagiso Senior School basketball team and a motivational talk with the form five students, led by Former American basketball player and motivational speaker Jonathan Breeden
Breeden told the students that poverty is a mindset and that a negative mindset will prevent the students from growth. He gave his life story as an example of how one can come from a poor background to be successful in life when they put their mind to it.
He said instead of using and selling drugs like most of his age mates, he used his gift of playing basketball to earn a living and move away from the streets.
He said that sport helped him to exercise discipline and he advised the students that everything they do now has an impact on their future. He said a lazy and negative mindset has a negative impact on their future.
Breeden told the students to start working on accomplishing their dreams now rather than later. He advised them to abondon bad old habits and rebuild their character with new positive habits noting that everyone needs a mentor who will go a long way in providing guidance.
He said because of his mentor, he was able to start his own business, Jon Breenden Enterprise after he retired from basketball. The school head, Chandapiwa Dladla, said her school cherishes such events as they inspire and improve students performance.
Dladla said the school has previously battled with lack of discipline among students that led to poor performance. She said since 2012, the school has made significant improvement of three per cent in the pass rate highlighting that one of the country’s top 10 achievers from last year’s BGCSE results was from Kagiso senior.
This was proof enough that her school was well on its way to improved performance. ENDS
