Speak out against violence - Thema
13 May 2013
South East District commissioner, Mr Ian Thema has implored society to speak out against violence.
Mr Thema said this during the handover of food stuff and blankets from the Broadcasters, an association of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology students studying broadcasting, to a victim of gender based violence, Ms Neo Motlhoki.
He said gender based violence, which affected all members of the community was embedded within society and had continued to spread to the current generation.
The district commissioner regretted that violence had affected even innocent children, either emotionally or physically.
Furthermore, Mr Thema advised parents to always intervene when their children sought guidance from violent relationships, saying often parents failed to intervene and instead advised their children to face the marriage challenges alone.
For his part, South East District council chairperson, Mr Thekiso Sorinyane commended Limkokwing students for their noble gesture.
He said although the council assisted most of the disadvantaged members of the community, it was not always enough hence the need for the community to extend a helping hand.
Mr Sorinyane further said it was encouraging to see youth taking it upon themselves to sensitise and assist those affected by gender based violence
The president of the Broadcasters’ Association, Mr Layani Elias said they identified Ms Motlhoki through Gender Links and they were committed to bringing hope to the lives of victims of gender based violence.
The beneficiary, Ms Motlhoki thanked the students for their noble gesture. ENDS
