Renewed hope as Morupule mine expands

31 Mar 2016

The proposed expansion for Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) has brought renewed hope to Batswana.

The  government through Ministry of Minerals , Energy, and Water Resources intends to increase power production in the country through construction of a 300 MW power station (Morupule B –unit 5 and 6 brownfield independent power producer project), to meet the growing power demand and ensure affordable power supply nationally.

Commenting on  the plans, residents of Palapye raised optimism on the envisaged project and are looking forward to support the government to ensure the success of this project.

One resident Bobo Gaonnwe told BOPA that the project of this magnitude can only mean guaranteed improved livelihoods.

“As an upcoming entrepreneur , I might not benefit financially from the proposed expansion but as an employer I stand to benefit from any improved skills transferred to community members,” Mr Gaonnwe said.

He said the project will address the problem of power cuts as a result of insufficient power adding that his business will thrive when there is sufficient power supply.

Another resident whose family ploughing fields were expropriated to pave way for the proposed expansion,  Mr Releseng Mabogo applauded the powers that be for embracing the notion of “engaged citizenry”.

“The Government and MCM ought to be applauded for the genuine consultation hence the project was mooted,” said Mabogo. Mr Mabogo further said that the continued dialogue and regular consultation made them appreciate the project’s aims and objectives.

He further said this project will put Palapye on the world map and will also help the residents’ aspirations of seeing Palapye being elevated to a town status. ENDS
