Francistown history remain undocumented

30 Mar 2016

The Mayor of Francistown, Ms Sylvia Muzila has said despite the city’s rich history, there is very little documentation of such.

Speaking at the Roving Torch celebrations at the city's Central Park , Ms Muzila said the lack of documentation resulted in gaps in the chronological arrangement of events.

She called upon the youth to make sure that the city’s history was well documented so that it will be taught to younger generations.

''Francistown has its unique traditions and cultures associated with the local people but some of the residents lack the historical perspective,'' she pointed out.

In addition, she explained that with the great heritage they belong to, young people need to have it at their own heart so that their roots spread to time immemorial.

Unpacking the name 'Nyangabwe' she said before the area was named Francistown it was called 'Nyangabgwe' which name came from the hill that towers over it.

She said the name came about after an incident in which a hunter had stalked what he thought was an antelope on the hill, but found that it was only a rock.

Regarding the golden jubilee independence celebrations, Ms Muzila urged Batswana to take ownership and be part of the event. She assured her audience that the BOT50 committee had promised Batswana “greatest celebrations ever.”

She said the successful handing over of the roving torch between different villages, towns and settlements was proof that despite religious and ethnic differences, Batswana remained a united and proud nation.

Ms Muzila urged Batswana to remain tolerant and united even beyond 2016 when the country would be celebrating its golden jubilee.

Member of Parliament for Francistown West, Mr Ignatius Moswaane appreciated the work done by the public servants noting that the country was what it is because of their deeds. MP Moswaane urged the community and other stakeholders to unite with public servants as they are there to develop the nation through the leadership of politicians.

He went on to say everywhere the torch goes the people of the area are expected to come together and showcase their achievements over the years as well as their culture.  According to him this will also help Batswana to celebrate their heritage .

The roving torch was handed over to Tonota Sub- district on March 27 to be celebrated accordingly in Natale, Borolong, Shashe Mooke, Tonota villages, amongst others and will be handed over to Bobirwa Sub -district on April 7.

When receiving the roving torch from Francistown District Commissioner Ms Cordelia Mpape, the Tonota Sub- district senior district officer Mr Ewetse Selelo promised to take care and give the roving torch the honour it deserves.ENDS
