New Age Nursery donates to SOS

10 May 2013

The SOS Children’s village in Tlokweng has received a donation of three dairy cows.

The cows, comprising two pregnant jerseys and a calf, were donated by Mrs Veena Mahindroo of New Age Nursery and Day Care Centre on May 8.

Mrs Mahindroo encouraged SOS to take care of the cows so that they would breed and meet the centre's milk supply. She said if carefully looked after, the three cows would address milk shortage at SOS and reduce the burden of purchasing milk hence saving some money.

SOS national director, Mr Motshwari Kitso said although the cows would address milk shortage, they would also give children an opportunity to live with domesticated animals.

He said this complemented the centre’s pledge of supporting government to take care of the underprivileged and vulnerable children through giving them a decent upbringing. However, he said for SOS to achieve its mission of all rounded upbringing of children, there was need for the community to support in terms of food, clothing and skills so that they would adapt well in the community.

“We look up to individuals and corporate entities to take care of these children as child sponsors, house sponsors or share skills with them, but above all there is love that we can show to these children,” he added. He said since its inception, SOS had managed to graduate about 330 children, the majority of whom had gelled well into the mainstream society.

“We are doing well because we have a 75 per cent success rate,” Mr Kitso said. He further said SOS was in need of help more than ever, as its main donors who were from the European Union had cut their funding due to the euro-zone crisis. ENDS
