Home Economics instils self-reliance
22 Mar 2016
Home Economics is a multi-faceted subject that covers a wide range of components such as home management, fashion and fabrics, financial management, which when put together, can instil self-reliance.
The Mahalapye sub region principal education officer, Ms Annah Diau said this when officiating at the Home Economics day at Mahutagane Community Junior Secondary School in Shoshong recently.
Ms Diau said with the skills acquired from this subject, students had limitless opportunities to venture into the many businesses available under this field such as fashion design, bakery and catering to name but a few thus urging students to take the subject with increased seriousness.
“The market today is saturated with businesses borne out of Home Economics which are run by graduates of this subject who do not only benefit from the businesses but also create employment opportunities for others,” she emphasized, encouraging present day students to follow suit.
She further said gone are the days when Home Economics was perceived as female oriented and dealt with merely cooking because this myth has since been done away with as evidenced by the number of men who continue to launch successful careers related to Home Economics.
Furthermore, Ms Diau said when applied with a high level of intelligence, the simple and yet important skills acquired from here and within can do enormous exploits which are otherwise not thought of. Ten needy students and their families received food hampers from companies that sponsored the event.
For his part, Window Décor and Fabric Designers managing director, Mr Trevor Ndlovu said his company was motivated to give following the footsteps of the country’s president Lt Gen.Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama of showing compassion to the less privileged.
He expressed that “there was more happiness in giving than receiving,” and therefore his company felt lucky to have been approached to help because they were also given the much needed opportunity of giving back to the community.
Mr Ndlovu said he hoped that the relationship established between his company and the school would not end here as their doors remained open to the school. ENDS
