The acting director of the Department of Transport and Road Safety, Mr Bokhutlo Modukanele says taking precautionary measures on the road is the best present Batswana can give to the country during the upcoming Easter holidays and 50th golden jubilee.
Mr Modukanele said this during a roadshow on Friday in Moshupa. He noted that road mishaps continue to claim lives in the process robbing families and the nation of bread winners and the much needed human resource.
“Loss of lives in our roads is gruesome in that many breadwinners that fall victim to road carnages leave behind dependents who in most instances become the sole responsibility of the government,” he said.
He told the gathering that 411 lives; 304 men and 107 women respectively fell victims to road mishaps in 2015.
Mr Modukanele pleaded with road users to exercise caution and ensure zero accidents on the roads.
Kgosi Oscar Mosielele commended the Moshupa Roads and Safety Committee for doing a sterling job, and urged them not to be discouraged in their efforts to promote road safety.
He said commemorating road safety day gives committee members and the public a chance to share ideas and strategise on the way forward.
For his part, Pastor Fane Moshapa of Apostolic Faith Mission in Moshupa called on the nation to pray.
Gookodisa headman, Mr Moanakwena Keloneilwe blamed lack of botho as the primary source of misfortune besieging the nation.
He said the good manners that Batswana were renowned for was the only remedy to take the nation back in the right track.
Sub Inspector Ismael Kgotlaetsho of Moshupa police said the objectives of the roadshow include networking among different role players in the fight against road mishaps and promoting and spreading road safety messages. Ends
