Batswana embrace motorsport

20 Mar 2016

Batswana have been encouraged to take up motorsport as a career.

Speaking after being crowned the overall winner of the inaugural Botswana Motorsport Car Spinning championship at the Fairground Spin City Palace, 28 year old Shatiso Morima encouraged local motorsport fanatics to try their luck with cars and not consider it an elite sport.

Botswana and South African spinners showcased their spinning prowess at the spinning contest codenamed The Hurricane held at the fairground rear parking where enterprisinng spinner Morima emerged the winner.

Car spinning contests are judged on crowd response with style and attitude being important factors and it therefore came as no surprise that Morima was adjudged the winner by the impressive crowd that had turned out for the competition.

The 28 year old from the youthful Team Block 8, one of the emerging dare devils in spinning circles beat spinners as he cemented his standing as an accomplished performer, much to the delight of the crowd.

Though he had reservations about the spinning track Morima said he was excited to emerge the winner and will strive for more honours in the coming events.

The spinners came head on with a collection of car trick such as the snake, the kitchen and burning out the tyre.

Botswana Spin Masters, Thuso Modongo finished second while another crowd favorite Thuto Rasegotswa, affectionately known as The Sheriff from Bumper Boys came on the third spot.

The spinning fiesta had attracted a considerable number of reputable spinners from across the border. Pretoria based accomplished spinners Ziko and Isla Bonita also had the crowd begging for more. Veteran spinner Jeff James did not make it to Botswana as was expected.

In an interview on the sidelines of the contest, Spin City publicity secretary Refilwe Dintwe expressed delight at the “amazing” crowd and organizers.

She said they were planning to host another contest next month still under the auspices of the local motor sport governing body Botswana Motorsport. Ends
