Car spinning madness hits Spin City Palace

17 Mar 2016

Car spinning junkies are expected to pack the Fairground rear parking area also known as the Spin City Palace to the rafters tomorrow (March 19) for a pure adrenalin rush when car spinners showcase their spinning prowess.

The inaugural Botswana Car Spinning championship hosted by Botswana Motorsport (BMS) in conjunction with Spin City is codenamed The Hurricane.

In an interview, Spin City spokesperson Refilwe Dintwe, said they had put together necessary logistics to offer a more exciting contest. She said the sport will be making its maiden appearance on the motorsport calendar after being banned due to recklessness on the part of some unlicensed spinners. She said the weekends’ competition would feature licensed spinners from the governing body, BMS.

The spinning fiesta would attract a considerable number of reputable spinners from across the border headlining the list being veteran king of spin, Jeff James. Other names likely to draw attention are Pretoria based accomplished spinners Ziko and Isla Bonita. Also headlining the international list are Soshanguve’s Bekzin and Smash.

The local boys would bet their last coins on the likes of Thuto Rasegotswa known in spinning circles as The Sheriff. King Joe, Malombo Tsikane and Thuso Modongo are part of the local spinners expected to burn out their tyres.

Spinning in Botswana has grown from leaps and bounds making it the second biggest motorsport in the country after the legendary Toyota Desert Race popularly known as Mantshwabisi.

Since its introduction, local motorsport fans have greeted spinning, which looks like a near death experience with wild applause. Sexton Leepile, Rasegotswa to name a just a few are just a part of the local boys who are trying to clean up the sport’s image. Ends
