Makgadikgadi trail links tourism sites

09 Mar 2016

The Department of National Museum and Monuments has developed the Makgadikgadi heritage trail to link all tourism attractions within the area, says lands and and housing minister, Mr Prince Maele

Answering a parliamentary question on behalf of the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Maele said the trail links Sowa Town, Kokonje, Mosu, Lekhubu, Greens and Chapmans Baobabs.

He highlighted that the road linking the areas was in the process of being graded in order to make the heritage trail more accessible.

Mr Maele said the two major tourism activities undertaken by Botswana Tourism Organisation in the area were the Makgadikgadi Epic and the Race for Rhinos, noting that the latter was hosted for the first time at Lekhubu Island in 2015.

The minister added that the development of the heritage trail would increase tourism activities in the area due to the improvement of the road access.

He further said the heritage trail road from Sowa Town to Mosu via Kokonje has been completed and that the referenced road was covered within the rest of the developments.

However, he said the area was not classified under the eight economic zones.

The MP for Boteti East, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister if he did not see the need to motivate the construction of a road from the Thalamabele Veterinary Gate through Mosu and Mmatshumo to Zoroga to boost tourism in the area through the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).

He also asked what impact could such a road have on tourism, and to state the two major activities that were being carried out in the area and how the road could contribute to tourism. Ends
