BIUST to help diversify economy

10 Mar 2016

Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) will help diversify the economy and create sustainable employment.Acting head of the centre for business management and entrepreneurship at the institution, Dr Racious Moatshe said they intend to transform the economy from one heavily reliant on mineral resources to a knowledge-intensive system.

He said BIUST graduates would be able to apply their knowledge to launch into entrepreneurship.

The aim of the workshop was to inform the community of Palapye about developments, plans and achievements of the university. He said the role of entrepreneurship in the economy was to produce high quality goods and services through improved innovation and technology so as to promote economic growth.

He said BIUST understands that it has a role to play in the country’s economic diversification through the provision of highly skilled scientists that the industry needs to grow entrepreneurship and research.

He said they have designed entrepreneurship programmes for both undergraduate and post graduate students to meet the needs of the industry and to prepare their graduates to create employment for others and diversify the economy.

He said entrepreneurs contribute to the GDP of the country by turning natural resources and other raw materials into marketable goods. He added that entrepreneurship organises land, natural resources, labour and capital in order to produce goods and services.

He noted that many people, including the educated, lack entrepreneurship skills, adding that entrepreneurship was the only way to grow the economy.

He said the private sector has not yet developed enough to create employment opportunities, which makes the government the major economic diversifier in the country. Ends
