The North East District Council has paid Nyanise Builders more than P1.7 million for work done on the construction of a workshop in Masunga.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Frans Van Der Westhuizen said the project was awarded to Nyanise Builders in January 2006 at a contract sum of P1 422 501.

On completion of the project in July 2008, he said the council paid the contractor P1 676 279.75 the difference being the additional money paid for variation that had been made during the course of the contract.

He said subsequent to receiving the final payment, Nyanise Builders raised a dispute over the payment which resulted in the council and the contractor entering into protracted discussions which culminated in a joint re-measurement of the works being undertaken on February 10, 2012.

In resolving the dispute, it was concluded that P23 195.28 be paid to the contractor, and that it was paid on May 2014 and the matter was taken as closed.

The MP for Francistown West, Mr Ignatius Moswaane had asked the minister if he was aware that Nyanise Builders, which was engaged by the North East District Council to build a workshop had long completed the project, but that the contractor had not been paid after more than five years. He also asked why the contractor continues to be paid in instalments.
