Ministry to address accommodation challenges

Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Prince Maele, says due to financial constraints, he is unable to make a commitment as to when villages of Mababe, Khwai, Sankoyo, Shorobe and Phuduhudu will be provided with accommodation.Mr Maele however said his ministry will continue to engage other stakeholders to assist in alleviating the housing situation in the said villages and the rest of the country.
He told Parliament on February 16 that he was aware of the acute shortage of housing for public officers in the said villages.“Shortage of housing is a common phenomenon in almost all villages, towns and cities in the country,” he added.
The minister said it was worth noting that out of the 31 600 housing units available for public officers, the total establishment is estimated to be about 127 312, leaving a huge housing deficit.He however said the government continues to provide housing for eligible public officers through three categories of housing being, institutional, district and pool housing.MP for Maun West Mr Konstantinos Markus had asked him if he was aware of shortage of accommodation for civil servants in the villages and what he was going to do to address te problems.
