Olympic ticket eludes volleyball women
15 Feb 2016
The senior national women volleyball team has failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The team came third in Pool B of the qualifiers held in Cameroon.
Led by stars such as Tracy Chaba, Tebogo Sejewe and Thapelo Kamberuka, the team was optimistic of doing well after having engaged in a month long training camp. However, they were beaten 3-0 by Algeria in the first pool match on Friday. Their Olympic dream died when they succumbed to another 3-0 loss to Egypt in their second match on Saturday.
However, Kabo Ntshinogang’s team salvaged a measure of consolation with a 3-2 win over Uganda in the last pool match to qualify for the fifth place classification match where they were set to play against Tunisia yesterday. Algeria and Egypt progressed to the semifinals from Pool B while Kenya and Cameroon progress from Pool A.
The winner of the final will book tickets to the Olympics while the runners-up and third place finishers will have another chance to qualify through the world Olympic qualification tournament. ENDS
